BUKIT BERUNTUNG: The MADANI Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s basic food supply with the official halal certification of Gula Rahmah (Rahmah Sugar) , an initiative aimed at enhancing public confidence in the availability of safe, reliable and affordable sugar.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the Halal Certification Ceremony for Gula Rahmah yesterday, marking the product’s formal recognition as compliant with halal requirements, hygiene standards and regulatory provisions set by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).
The certification signifies that Gula Rahmah meets established cleanliness and halal standards, while adhering to domestic regulatory controls governing supply and distribution.
HMBE Legacy Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Ahmad Badurol Hisham Mukhatar said the certification plays a crucial role in strengthening consumer trust in the national sugar supply chain, particularly within the domestic market.
He said the initiative demonstrates that sugar can be supplied without government subsidies while still being offered at prices below the current market rate of RM2.70 per kilogram.
“Although implemented without any government subsidy, Gula Rahmah remains more affordable than the prevailing market price, in line with the government’s efforts to ease cost-of-living pressures,” he told reporters after the ceremony.
Currently, Gula Rahmah is being distributed on a limited basis through the Mobile Rahmah Sales programme coordinated by the ministry, a move aimed at ensuring controlled distribution and targeted reach.
Ahmad Badurol said the company hopes the initiative will eventually be expanded more widely across the domestic market, allowing more Malaysians to access sugar at prices below the controlled rate.
He added that broader distribution could serve as an effective mechanism in addressing cost-of-living challenges, particularly for daily essential goods.
The ceremony also featured a showcase of Gula Rahmah products, which will be distributed in stages as part of ongoing government efforts to ensure national food security.
Gula Rahmah is seen as a progressive measure under the MADANI Government to strengthen governance within the food industry while prioritising public welfare.
