Presentation of lion heads to five organisations underline understanding and rapport among the people

PENAMPANG: The importance of social cohesion in a multi-racial society was further stressed today when the Penampang Member of Parliament Datuk Ewon Benedick presented lion heads to six organisations.
The organisations include Fook Tet Kung Temple, Nosoob Baru Lion Dance Association, Youth Lion Dance Club Penampang, Chinese Cultural Association Sabah and Subang Lion Dance Association with Chinese Welfare Association who didn't attend to collect the head.
The lion head presentatiin event held at the Tapikong Fook Tet Kung in Dongonggon was held with pomp where they showcased the colourful and vibrant lion dance performed by Lion Dancers from the temple.
Ewon, who is the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative, also carried out the symbolic 'opening the Lion's eye for the new 'heads'.
Held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration, he was joined by Kapayan State Assemblywoman Jannie Lasimbang and Datuk Donald Mojuntin the UPKO Deputy President and other community leaders in the ceremony.
This traditional norm where a red dot is painted on the lion's eyes is believed to bless and awaken the Lion's spirit.
Four of the lion heads were sponsored by the Minister while two others were sponsored by Jannie.
In a brief interview Ewon stated that his visit and involvement in the ceremony was of utmost importance in a multi-racial society as it forms the foundation for harmony, equality, and social cohesion.
He said as long as he was in his office as Penampang Member of Parliament and a community leader, this norm would be continued.
