KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) has expressed serious concern over the recent incident at Timba Timba Island.
Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew clarified, however, that the island does not fall under the designated management or enforcement jurisdiction of Sabah Parks.
“Nevertheless, following the incident, we are working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out."
"The Ministry understands that the local district office and council have already taken the necessary steps to restrain parties from conducting unauthorised business activities on the island,” she said in a statement on Thursday.
Liew said that an eviction notice had earlier been issued by the relevant authority to illegal settlers on the island.
“All business operators on the island must comply with existing regulations. Those without valid licences must not be permitted to operate or collect fees,” she stressed.
Underscoring the need for decisive measures by all relevant authorities to safeguard tourists in Sabah, the Minister described it as regrettable that incidents of fighting had taken place at a tourist destination.
“We have been informed that police have arrested those involved in the fight on Timba Timba Island. It is our hope that such incidents will not be repeated,” she said.
Liew also reminded tour operators to prioritise safety and avoid taking tourists to unsafe locations.
“We urge all stakeholders to work together to ensure that visitors enjoy a safe and positive experience in Sabah,” she added.
