TAWAU: More than 1,300 residents of Kg Kurnia Jaya, Batu 4, Jalan Apas, who lost their homes in a huge fire on Thursday will be given RM10,000 cash relief and food aid.

Tawau MP Datuk Christina Liew, made the announcement during a visit on Friday to the site of the incident which destroyed about 700 squatter homes there.

Liew also visited the fire victims being accommodated at Surau Kg Hidayat and two government evacuation centres at Dewan Kg Hidayat and Dewan Kemas Kg Batu 4.

Liew, TY Fung and her team with some of the fire victims at the site of the temporary clinic at Kg Kurnia Jaya.

According to her, the Tawau Parliamentary People's Service Centre has set up a temporary clinic housed in tents near the site of the fire, in collaboration with Permai Polyclinics Tawau which is offering free health screening service to the victims.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, Liew urged the Government to give priority to the now homeless residents of Kg Kurnia Jaya in its People's Housing Programme or Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) this year.

"I will be writing to the Government on behalf of the people. The time has come for them to be settled in permanent homes, instead of continuing to live in temporary homes on stilts which are prone to fires," she said.
