KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Rugby Union (SRU) has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to collaborate on sports science and medicine.

The union was represented by SRU deputy president Nelson W Angang, vice president 1 Terence Baduk, and medical director Dr Kiran Kandiah.

The collaboration aims to improve the standards of player welfare and performance in Sabah through the use of scientific methods and facilities.

According to Dr Kiran, the first agenda of the collaboration will be to conduct pre-tournament testing for the national 7s players.

"The tests include isokinetic muscle testing, aerobic fitness (VO2max), anaerobic fitness (Wingate), balance and proprioception tests along with basic movement skills tests," he said in a statement.

He added that the data collected from these tests would help identify the players' weak areas and structure tailored programs for them.

"This can reduce the risk of injury and at the same time improve their performance," he said.

He also said that the collaboration would benefit both parties in terms of knowledge sharing and research opportunities.
