KOTA KINABALU: Sabah can become an international wellness and fitness destination with its stunning natural landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage.

This unique synergy has made Sabah an appealing choice for the Piloxing community, which has selected the state as the location for their travel fitness retreat series, according to Chu Mingwei, Founding Partner of Beyond Footprints Travel Singapore.

“The warm hospitality of Sabah has made us feel right at home, and this perfect blend of factors is exactly what we were seeking,” Chu remarked during the Piloxing Voyage 3.0 program held at a local resort.

76 Piloxing participants from Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei gathered in Kota Kinabalu for a transformative four-day retreat focused on relaxation, rejuvenation, and empowerment.

“The concept for the retreat arose from the increasing demand for thematic travel experiences that combine wellness, adventure, and cultural exploration,” Chu explained. He emphasized that thematic travel fosters deeper connections among participants as they engage in fitness activities together.

The first two Piloxing programs took place in Indonesia, and following the positive experience in Kota Kinabalu, there is potential for the fourth series to return next year with an even larger group.

Chu expressed gratitude for the support provided by the Sabah Tourism Board, highlighting the contributions of Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jimit, who hosted a welcoming dinner, and Connie Chong, Managing Director of Funholiday Tours and Travel, who ensured seamless arrangements throughout the retreat.

“Support from local stakeholders is crucial for the successful coordination and collaboration of such programs,” he noted.

Senior Master Instructor for Piloxing Asia, Rasidah Caudal, explained that Piloxing combines Pilates, boxing, and high-energy dance workouts, a concept founded by former professional dancer Viveca Jensen in 2009. Pilates, a mind-body exercise, is named after its creator, German physical trainer Joseph Pilates.

“We aim to cultivate a community that embraces fitness holidays," Rasidah said. “We want to host Piloxing sessions in various locations throughout Sabah, which offers abundant opportunities for adventure seekers to explore its rich culture and diverse cuisine—elements that are truly unique.”

During their retreat, participants explored Mari Mari Cultural Village, visited Anjung Kinabalu for local culinary delights and shopping and enjoyed water-based activities at Tunku Abdul Rahman Parks.

Rasidah noted that the Piloxing sessions fostered camaraderie among attendees from different countries.

“My experience here has been extraordinary. The people are incredibly friendly, and there’s something uniquely special about Sabah. The presence of so many diverse tribes is something I rarely encounter elsewhere. The culture is remarkably rich, and it’s evident that my team is thrilled,” Rasidah shared. “We are confident that fitness holidays will emerge as the next big trend.”
