KINABATANGAN: Demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, Sawit Kinabalu Group (SKG), through its Conservation and Biodiversity Unit (CBU), in collaboration with the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD), successfully hosted the 2025 World Environment Day (WED) celebration at the Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA) in Kinabatangan.
Now in its third local edition, this year’s event was themed “Ending Plastic Pollution,” with the aim of raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting biodiversity conservation among SKG staff, local communities, and youth, particularly within the Kinabatangan region.
A key highlight of the celebration was the Environmental Education (EE) Programme, which engaged 30 school children from across the district. Facilitated by CBU and its conservation partners, the programme offered interactive, hands-on activities designed to foster a deeper understanding of ecological challenges and the importance of conservation from an early age.
In line with the Greening Malaysia Campaign under the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign, a national initiative launched in 2021, the event also featured a tree planting activity. Led by the Sabah Forestry Department, the state’s implementing authority, this activity supported national reforestation targets and contributed to habitat restoration within the conservation area.
The event was attended by a diverse range of participants, including representatives from the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), Danau Girang Field Centre (DGFC), WWF-Malaysia, KOPEL BHD, the Sabah Wildlife Department (Kinabatangan), Orang Juga, as well as local schools SK Paris 1, SK Batu Puteh, and SK Sentosa Jaya. Community representatives from Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) Kg Mengaris, Kg Batu Puteh, and Kg Paris 1 also participated, alongside nearby plantations and estates.
This celebration reaffirmed Sawit Kinabalu Group’s longstanding dedication to sustainable development, aligning with its corporate Sustainability Goals and supporting the broader United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships in fostering a culture of sustainability and conservation across Sabah.
