Six new Covid-19 clusters registered in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: A total of six new Covid-19 clusters were registered in Sabah today involving seven districts.


Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Masidi Manjun said the first cluster is Jalan Tungku in Lahad Datu involving community infection.


"The index case is a 30-year-old woman who tested positive on June 28 at Tungku Health clinic.


"Following the case, out of 233 close contacts screened, 12 tested positive," he said in a statement.


As of today, the total cumulative number for the cluster is 35 cases, including four new cases recorded today.


For the Gerbang Kauran cluster in Keningau, the index case is a 47-year-old woman who tested positive through symptomatic screening in Keningau Hospital on July 21.


According to Masidi, the cluster was believed to have started from social activities between the mosque committee and their family members.

"Currently the cluster recorded a total of nine positive cases including two new cases today,” he stated.


Meanwhile, the Tinabalu cluster in Kinabatangan involves a workplace infection after the virus spread throughout the palm oil plantation.


The index case is a 49-year-old farm supervisor who tested positive on July 19 through workplace screening. He was then brought to Kinabatangan Hospital.


“Following the case, close contact screening found 25 more individual testing positive among the index case’s family members and colleagues.


The Kg Sogo-Sogo cluster in Tongod has a cumulative total of nine cases and the index case is a 32-year-old man who tested positive on 23 July after having symptoms since July 18.


Masidi said that the cluster is also categorised as a community infection and the index case is currently being treated in Sandakan quarantine centre.


As for Gipan Kolombong cluster, it involves the Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran districts.


He explained that the cluster was detected through a workplace infection at a cement mixing facility in Kota Kinabalu.


The index case is a 28-year-old security guard from Kg Cenderaksih Inanam Metro town. He exhibited symptoms since July 19 before testing positive for the virus on July 21. He was placed in the quarantine centre for further treatment.


“Out of 67 samples taken in Kota Kinabalu, 37 individuals tested positive including 27 new cases today. Meanwhile, 28 samples tested negative with another two still awaiting results.


“Following the case, three new positive cases related to the cluster were registered in Tuaran. This brings the cumulative total of cases for this cluster to 40.


Masidi stated that the Simpang Tiga cluster in Ranau was categorised as a high-risk cluster and had spread in a treatment centre in the district.


An index case is a 29-year-old man who works as a health officer at an emergency department of the treatment centre. He tested positive through a symptomatic screening on July 18.


“Out of 417 close contacts screened, 14 individuals tested positive including three new cases today. This includes eight cases involving health officers, and six individuals of the index’s housemate Kg. Lembah Permai and Kg Sokid Bundu Tuhan.
