TENOM: The Sabah State Government is ramping up cultural tourism with the development of the Murut Cultural Centre in Tenom, featuring a striking Skull House as its star attraction.
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Jafry Ariffin announced today that the project, under the Enhancing Tourism Products at the Sabah Murut Cultural Centre (PKMST), focuses on preserving Murut heritage while boosting sustainable visitor appeal.
Rural Development Minister Datuk Rubin Balang was also present.

“This isn't just about sights—it's immersive storytelling rooted in authenticity, letting visitors truly feel Murut culture,” Jafry said .
Key highlights include the iconic Skull House, a cultural hub with historical exhibits, traditional artefacts, and displays tracing Murut origins. Its design guides guests through a meaningful heritage journey.
The project also features 10 unique grave huts showcasing sub-ethnic groups like Murut Tagol, Timugon, and Tangara, each with distinct architecture reflecting their roots.

Beyond tourism, it doubles as an educational platform, strengthening local identity and benefiting communities via cultural programmes.
Started on 6 May 2025, it's due for completion by 6 May 2026 at a cost of RM825,559.60.
Jafry is confident it'll become Sabah's next big draw, cementing Tenom's spot on the world heritage tourism map.
All work respects cultural sensitivities for lasting preservation.
