TUARAN: The State Government continues to intensify efforts to enhance the State’s energy security through the implementation of various strategic projects, aiming to provide a stable, sustainable, and resilient electricity supply in support of economic development and the well-being of the people.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor stated that the State Government consistently supports measures undertaken by Sabah Electricity to improve service efficiency and upgrade the electricity supply infrastructure across Sabah.

He explained that these ongoing efforts include increasing power generation capacity, strengthening transmission and distribution networks, and enhancing service quality for consumers throughout the State.

“This commitment aligns with the State Government’s mission to deliver a stable and sustainable electricity supply, thereby driving Sabah’s development aspirations and ensuring the continued well-being of its people.

“In this regard, the State Government, through the Sabah Energy Council, Sabah Energy Commission, and related agencies, is implementing a comprehensive phased strategy encompassing short-, medium-, and long-term plans,” he said.

He made these remarks at the "Seikhlas Budi, Sesuci Ramadan" programme with the Chief Minister, held at the compound of Masjid At-Taqwa Laya-Laya on Saturday.

Hajiji highlighted that one of the key initiatives currently underway is the development of new power generation projects featuring a more diversified energy mix.

This includes utilisation of gas-fired power plants as a transitional energy source, alongside the expansion of renewable energy sources such as hydro, solar, and wind, as well as the utilisation of modern energy storage technologies, including Battery Energy Storage Systems and pumped-storage hydropower.

Meanwhile, he noted that the Sabah–Sarawak Power Grid Interconnection Project, launched earlier this year, is expected to further strengthen the stability of the State’s electricity supply system.

He stated that this project will not only make energy supply more stable and reliable but will also gradually reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based generation.

“At the same time, it will increase Sabah’s electricity reserve margin and bolster investor confidence in the reliability of the State’s power supply,” he added.

Hajiji also mentioned that the recent commissioning of the 15-megawatt (MW) Solar Project in Tuaran marks a significant milestone in Sabah’s energy transformation.

He explained that this project will not only increase the energy capacity of the State’s electricity system but also aligns with the objectives outlined in the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP2040), which emphasise the development of renewable energy and diversification of energy sources.

“This initiative sends a clear message that Sabah is committed to strengthening its energy security because, without a stable and sufficient energy supply, attracting high-impact investments and developing value-added industries would be challenging,” he said.

He also commended the efforts of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Sabah Electricity in fulfilling corporate social responsibility through the Wakalah Zakat contribution initiative, which supports asnaf groups, mosques, and tahfiz institutions in Tuaran.

According to him, the programme not only benefits those in need but also reinforces ties between the government, agencies, and the community.
