16 Feb 2021

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has lost one of its great heroes when the former general manager of Sabah Tourism Board Datuk Irene Benggon Charuruks passed away at 70, yesterday.

She was known as the 'iron lady' of Sabah Tourism Board for her significant works in helping the state tourism industry flourished when she held the position for 25 years from 1991.

She passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after being admitted a few days ago, however, no information on the cause of death has been released.

In extending condolences to the family of the late Irene on behalf of the State Government, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said he had lost a good friend who he described her as a hardworking, active, and a good and effective officer.

"Datuk Irene has contributed a lot to the development of tourism in Sabah.

"She has excelled in her service and was recognised internationally for what she had done. I hope this recognition mitigates the loss for her family," he said.

"May her soul rest in peace," added Masidi, who was former Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment.
