KOTA KINABALU: A recent case involving a father who raped his daughters in Lahad Datu has underscored the urgent need to strengthen preventive efforts at both family and community levels.

Sabah Minister of Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing, Datuk Julita Majungki, said more robust preventive measures, including sustained engagement with families, communities and religious institutions, are essential in addressing such deeply concerning social issues.

“This is a deeply distressing incident and should never occur. While offenders must be held accountable before the courts, prevention is equally critical,” she said when commenting on the case.

According to reports, the case involved a father who sexually abused his two daughters over several years at their home in Lahad Datu.

The 54-year-old man was sentenced to a cumulative 165 years’ imprisonment and 110 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to 11 charges.

Julita also urged victims of abuse to come forward and report their circumstances to the authorities, emphasising that support systems are readily available.

“If they are in an abusive environment and require help, they should not hesitate to seek assistance. Support is available,” she said.

She highlighted that protection centres under the Sabah Women’s Affairs Department (JHEWA) provide safe accommodation and support for victims of abuse.

Among these is the Women’s Protection Shelter (RUPAWAN), which offers temporary shelter, protection and rehabilitation services for women in crisis.

Those in need of assistance may contact RUPAWAN via WhatsApp at 011-27918840.

In addition, the Women’s Legal Aid Centre (PBGW) provides legal advice and assistance in matters such as domestic violence, divorce and child custody, ensuring women have access to justice and legal protection. The centre can be reached via WhatsApp at 010-5831891.

Through JHEWA, the ministry also implements advocacy programmes on domestic violence prevention and legal literacy to raise awareness and encourage early intervention.

“These initiatives are complemented by continuous awareness campaigns and community engagement efforts aimed at fostering positive family values.

“My ministry will continue to work closely with community leaders and relevant institutions to strengthen outreach efforts, particularly in guiding parents and families to create a safe environment for children,” she added.

Her remarks were made after attending the ministry’s Hari Raya celebration at Wisma Wanita on Thursday, which brought together staff from the ministry and its various departments and agencies.
