SINGAPORE: The sabahtradetourism.com.sg, in proud collaboration with tourism.gov.my and Singapore’s tabletop gaming community #Laiplayleow, successfully hosted the “My Trip in Sabah” Board Game Challenge – Singapore Edition recently .

The event creatively utilised the immersive world of tabletop gaming to bring the charm and cultural richness of the “Land Below the Wind” closer to Singaporean audiences.

Adding prestige to the event was Ismail Mohamad Bkri, Deputy High Commissioner of Malaysia to Singapore, who concurrently serves as Head of Chancery at the High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore, and who officiated the commencement of the final round.

The competition revolved around the board game My Trip in Sabah, created by Mr Poon Jon, the official and sole winner of the inaugural Sabah National Board Game Design Competition 2025. To ensure professional standards and gameplay excellence, acclaimed game designer Daryl Chow served as consultant during the game’s refinement process.

The final product offers players an engaging cultural experience, allowing them to journey across Sabah’s districts, encounter iconic wildlife, and discover the state’s rich heritage and attractions.

The highlight of the event was the crowning of the Singapore Champion, who will go on to represent Singapore at the Sabah National Tabletop Con (Series 2), scheduled to take place from 20–21 June 2026 at the Sabah Art Gallery in Kota Kinabalu.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to innovative tourism promotion,” said a representative of the organisers.

“Tabletop gaming is a powerful and immersive storytelling platform. Through this game, we are not merely entertaining participants, but also inviting Singaporeans to begin their journey to Sabah. We hope today’s challenge will inspire many to visit Kota Kinabalu this June and support our champion.”

Beyond the competition itself, the event also demonstrated how board games can serve as a meaningful platform for community building and social connection. Through face-to-face strategic gameplay, participants gained a deeper appreciation of Sabah’s majestic landscapes, diverse wildlife, and vibrant cultural traditions in a way that transcends conventional travel promotion.
