SANDAKAN: The development of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) must be aligned with industry needs.

Sungai Manila state assemblyman Datuk Hazem Mubarak Tun Musa said this is to ensure TVET students can secure employment after completing their studies.

“This is the real purpose when I raised the issue of TVET at the previous State Legislative Assembly sitting,” he told the media here today.

Earlier, Hazem officiated a training course on fertigation technology for chilli crops.

He said that the TVET courses offered need to be in line with industry requirements, including the modernisation of agriculture.

“We want them, when they finish their studies, to know where they can go and to have real job opportunities,” he said.

On other questions, Hazem said barter trade is not a new form of business in Sandakan.

He added that this kind of business has the potential to boost the local economy.

“I asked the government to study this trade at the last State Assembly sitting, as it can help to increase the economy,” he said.

He said that if Sandakan’s economy continues to grow, it can attract more investors to Sandakan.

“We need the government to look at this seriously. When the economy grows, it can have a positive impact on the people,” he added.

According to him, barter trade is still being carried out in Sandakan, but on a small scale.
