KENINGAU : A simple cushioned chair, creatively crafted from used tyres by local villagers, stole the spotlight recently when Liawan State Assemblyman, Datuk Annuar Ayub Aman, was seen seated comfortably on it during the Kaamatan Festival celebration at the Catholic Church in Bulu Silou Zone.

There was no red carpet, no lavish protocol, Annuar arrived alone, in a modest manner, yet was warmly received as if returning to his own family.

This chair may have been made from discarded tyres, but its significance is profound. Much like politics itself, respect is not earned through titles, but through genuine service to the people.

A photograph of Annuar smiling while sitting on the homemade chair has since gone viral on social media, resonating deeply as a powerful symbol of grounded leadership, one that shows up to listen, not to be pampered.

The Kaamatan programme in Bulu Silou also reflected Annuar’s closeness to the people. He took the time to mingle and connect, bridging no social distance and forgoing unnecessary formality. Residents praised him as a leader who has remained unchanged since his early days in service—approachable, humble, and sincere.

“We love leaders like this. He sits as our equal, stands as our equal. That’s what true leadership looks like,” said an elderly villager in attendance.

The symbolism of the tyre chair goes beyond mere optics, it stands as a reflection of leadership ‘by the people, for the people’, placing the community at the heart of its mission.

The slogan “Liawan Terurus, Liawan Maju” (Liawan Well-Managed, Liawan Progressing), championed by Annuar, is no longer just a phrase. It is being brought to life through action, proving that even the simplest moments, when carried out with sincerity, have the power to touch hearts.
