KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile, Malaysia’s newest 5G network provider, is the first telecommunications company in the country to enable comprehensive scam protection across its entire network.
Since full deployment in February 2025, this initiative has been carried out in partnership with Cellusys, an award-winning provider of signalling security, roaming, and analytics solutions. To date, U Mobile has successfully protected its customers from over 265 million scam calls and fraudulent SMS attempts.
By leveraging Cellusys’ Unified Signalling, SMS, and Voice Firewall solution, U Mobile has been able to prevent scam attempts at the network level. Unlike generic filtering systems, all inbound calls and SMS messages are first screened through the solution. If deemed suspicious, they are blocked before reaching customers’ devices.
This advanced protection has shielded U Mobile’s customers from scams impersonating authorities and institutions, SMS phishing (smishing), spoofed caller identities, manipulated caller ID information, and high-volume criminal campaigns targeting Malaysian consumers.
“At U Mobile, we are committed to safeguarding our customers from fraudulent activities. That’s why we took a proactive step to integrate Cellusys’ advanced scam protection solution directly into our core network security framework, making it accessible to all customers. We are proud to be the first telco in Malaysia to launch a full-scale, network-wide scam protection system, and our efforts have already yielded significant results, over 265 million scam calls and fraudulent SMS messages have been blocked to date. As we continue to enhance our network with cutting-edge technology, security remains a top priority. With the rollout of our next-generation 5G network nationwide, trusted connectivity is vital to supporting a resilient Malaysian digital economy,” said Woon Ooi Yuen, Chief Technology Officer of U Mobile.
“U Mobile’s leadership in protecting its customers sets a formidable benchmark for Malaysia and the wider region. We are honoured that Cellusys technology is powering this nationwide initiative, delivering the accuracy, resilience, and scale necessary to intercept scams before they reach consumers. This deployment exemplifies what can be achieved when operators commit to proven, real-world defence mechanisms rather than future plans,” stated Brendan Cleary, CEO of Cellusys.
According to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, 73% of Malaysians have reported experiencing scam calls and fraudulent SMS messages, one of the highest rates in Southeast Asia. Criminal groups are increasingly targeting households, senior citizens, and vulnerable individuals. Cellusys’ sophisticated signalling intelligence platform analyses traffic at the authoritative network layer to detect anomalies and fraudulent behaviour with high precision. Using behavioural and signalling-layer detection tuned specifically to Malaysian threat patterns, it provides deep visibility across voice and messaging channels, ensures high accuracy with minimal false positives, continuously adapts to evolving fraud tactics, and offers proven reliability at a national scale for operators worldwide.
