PENAMPANG: The United Kinabalu Progressive Organisation (UPKO) is always open to accepting new members regardless of race and religion.

Vice President Datuk Wong Thien Fook said that since the recent rebranding, UPKO's doors have always been open to anyone interested in joining the party's cause.

"Perhaps many are still unaware, but UPKO is actually a multi-ethnic party.

"I am of Chinese descent, but many in the committee are of indigenous (Bumiputera-Islam) descent such as the Dusun and Bajau.

"We in UPKO practice the concept of friendship, and I believe that all struggles begin with friendship. Anyone interested in joining UPKO's cause, the line of connection will begin with friendship. It is through strong friendships that we cultivate effective bonds for our cause," he said.

Datuk Wong made these remarks at a brief ceremony for the submission of new membership forms at the UPKO Central Office in Penampang earlier today.

During the ceremony, Datuk Wong received membership forms from Rama Buni, who represented other members for the opening of a new UPKO branch in Unggun Jaya, Sepanggar.

Meanwhile, Rama said that he and other friends made the decision to join UPKO because they were drawn to the party's open approach.

Rama expressed his confidence in the guidance of UPKO leaders, who are seen as sincere and committed in the struggle to protect the rights of the people and enhance the development of the state of Sabah.

In the meantime, Datuk Wong expressed his pleasure in welcoming new members and hoped to work closely with the new members to further strengthen UPKO's position in state and national administration.

Meanwhile, the Treasurer-General of UPKO and also the Chairperson of the UPKO Kota Kinabalu Division, Dennison R Indang, received new membership forms from Panil bin Jibul, who joined the Kudat division.

Dennison received the forms on behalf of the Kudat division chief of UPKO, Junsim Ruminzing.

Also present at the ceremony were UPKO Executive Secretary Datuk William Sampil and UPKO Kota Kinabalu Division Information Officer Arfandi Jaafar.
