KOTA KINABALU: A youth leader from United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) , Allison Chan, has called for a firm and united rejection of renewed claims over Sabah reportedly raised by the Philippines, stressing that the state’s sovereignty must not be challenged.
Chan said Sabah is a legitimate and integral part of the Federation of Malaysia, and any attempt to dispute its status should be strongly opposed by Sabahans.
She noted that Sabah attained independence through the formation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963, describing it as a historic milestone that marked the state’s formal inclusion as a sovereign territory within an independent nation.
According to her, Sabah’s sovereignty is firmly grounded in legal, historical and internationally recognised foundations.
“Any attempt to revive baseless claims is irresponsible and could undermine regional stability as well as relations between countries,” she said in a statement.
Chan also highlighted the important role of young people in safeguarding the state’s future, describing them as both heirs and defenders of Sabah’s rights, dignity and sovereignty.
She urged Sabah’s youth to be well-versed in history, understand legal principles and remain vocal in defending the state against threats or misrepresentation of facts.
“Sovereignty is not something that can be negotiated or compromised. It is fundamental to Sabah’s identity, security and future,” she added.
Chan further called on all parties, particularly young Sabahans, to remain united and resolute in defending the state’s sovereignty, guided by facts, historical understanding and a strong sense of belonging.
She stressed that such unity is essential to ensure Sabah continues to remain part of a free and sovereign Malaysia.
