KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Democratic Action Party (DAP) Luyang candidate-designate Chan Loong Wei today lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), urging a comprehensive investigation into potential irregularities involving the contractor of the Tun Fuad Stephens Botanical Park (Taman Botani Tun Fuad Stephens) upgrade project.
Chan said his decision followed recent online allegations by opposition figures claiming without basis, that the project was linked to certain elected representatives, with insinuations that the contractor had political ties to DAP.
“To ensure transparency, dispel unfounded accusations, and reassure the public, I have filed a report with the MACC so that an independent body can carry out an impartial investigation,” he said.
Chan stressed that DAP has consistently upheld the principles of clean, accountable politics and has nothing to conceal.
“Rather than allowing rumours to spread unchecked, it is far better to let the MACC conduct an independent investigation to ensure that all processes remain transparent and in full compliance,” he added.
He also pointed out a key fact: the tender and appointment of the contractor for the Tun Fuad project were finalised in 2022, at a time when DAP and Phoong Jin Zhe were in the opposition and held no authority or influence over government project decisions.
“This clearly shows that attempts to associate DAP with the project are purely baseless political manoeuvres,” Chan asserted.
He clarified that his report was not meant to question the legitimacy of the government project itself, but to ensure that any public project facing malicious allegations is investigated by a statutory body to preserve public confidence.
“The accusations attempting to link this project to DAP are entirely unfounded. My report to the MACC today demonstrates that DAP has no hidden interests whatsoever. Unlike others who merely post videos and spread rumours, we have taken the responsible step of lodging a formal report,” he remarked.
Chan emphasised that the Tun Fuad Park upgrade is a vital public initiative that enhances community recreation and safety, making transparency all the more crucial.
He urged the public to reject unverified claims and instead rely on facts and due process.
“If anyone possesses genuine evidence, they are welcome to submit it directly to the MACC. We fully support all professional and objective investigations,” he said.
Chan further pledged DAP’s full cooperation with any MACC inquiry and called on all political parties to refrain from spreading misinformation for political gain.
“Elections should be won through sound policies and hard work, not through smear campaigns,” he stressed.
“DAP will continue to uphold fact-based, clean and responsible politics. We act with a clear conscience, therefore, we have nothing to fear from any investigation.”
