PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has reaffirmed its strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education, amid growing global concerns over policies that limit such efforts, particularly in the United States (US).

Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the recent move by the US to restrict access for international students at Harvard University reflects a broader trend of declining inclusivity in global academia.

"These shifts challenge long-standing principles that foster cross-border trust and create space for shared intellectual growth.

"While the case is timely and familiar, it points to a broader retreat from inclusion and openness in higher education. The deeper issue is the shifting values that such actions reveal,” he said in a statement today.

He emphasised that Malaysia remains committed to promoting inclusive learning environments that support individuals from diverse backgrounds, in line with the country’s education policies and international collaborations.

“Our universities reflect this commitment by prioritising access, collaboration and mutual respect. These choices express our values and shape the future we seek to build,” he said.

Zambry added that Malaysia will continue to support inclusive education and stand in solidarity with institutions and communities affected by restrictive measures that limit access and weaken diversity.

“We remain committed to the principles that give education its purpose and reach,” he said.
