KOTA KINABALU: The Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon, one of the most prestigious and challenging mountain races in the world is set against the stunning and rugged landscape of Kinabalu Park. This race attracts elite athletes, trail runners, and adventure seekers from across the globe. The course takes participants on an arduous journey that tests their physical stamina, mental toughness, and technical skill.
The event showcased incredible stamina, determination, and competitive spirit among participants. Here, we celebrate the outstanding winners in various categories.
The Men’s Elite race was fiercely contested, with top runners pushing their limits. The winner was Ghianno Giancula from Italy, who completed the challenging course in an impressive 3 hours, 5 minutes, and 41 seconds. He won RM8000 and gifts. He was followed closely by William Boffeli, also from Italy, finishing just over a second later at 3:06.13. Boffeli received RM6000 and gifts. Luca Del Pero, another Italian athlete, secured third place with a time of 3:15.07. He brought home RM4000 and gifts.
Other notable finishers include Morgan James Elliot from the USA, Nicolas Molino Augustin from Spain, and Paul Ormaetxea Bilbao from Spain, showcasing the diverse international talent competing in the event. The race concluded with a strong showing from Russian, Filipino, and Japanese athletes, each demonstrating remarkable endurance.
The veteran men’s category saw seasoned athletes displaying their enduring prowess. Porter Daved Simpat from Kg Kiau Nuluh, Kota Belud led the pack with a commendable time of 3:50.50. He received RM8000 and gifts. He was followed by Raichin Sungkit from Kg Melangkap Kapah also in Kota Belud who brought home RM6000 and Safrey Sumping, from Kg Himbaan Kiulu, with times of 3:58.15 and 3:59.42 respectively. Safrey received RM4000. Milton Amat and Nelson Boon completed the top five, underscoring the competitive spirit of veteran runners.
In the women’s elite race, Anastasiia Rubstova from Russia emerged victorious, finishing in 3:46.13. Her strong performance set the tone for a competitive field of international female athletes. She received RM8000. A close second was Ainara Alcuaz Rodriguez from Spain, crossing the finish line at 4:12.39 also received RM6000. Lina Klara Emilia El Kott from Sweden clocked 4:27:48, grabbing RM4000 and gifts while Marcela Vasinova from the Czech Republic also delivered impressive performances, showcasing the global diversity of the participants.
The race concluded with other talented women from Japan, the Philippines, and Malaysia, each demonstrating exceptional endurance and competitive spirit.
The Mount Kinabalu Climbathon continues to be a premier event that attracts top endurance athletes worldwide.
