Najib and son must pay RM1.7 billion in outstanding tax, Court of Appeal rules

KUALA LUMPUR: The Court of Appeal here has ruled that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his son Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin pay RM1.69 billion and RM37.6 million in outstanding tax, respectively, after dismissing their appeal against the High Court's decision to enter a summary judgment.


According to a report by Malay Mail, Court of Appeal judge Datuk Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil said no merit in these two appeals were found and that no error in the judgement of the two High Court judges.


The three-member bench led by him in a unanimous decision dismissed both individuals appeal costs of RM10,000 each.


The bench which comprised Justices Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera and Datuk Supang Lian earlier heard submissions from the lawyer for Najib and his son Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, and senior federal counsel Dr Hazlina Hussain for the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).


Najib and Nazifuddin were also represented by counsel Muhammad Farhan Shafee, Wee Yeong Kang, Mohamed Reza Rahim and Hannah Kam Zhen Yi, while senior revenue counsel Hazlina Hussain appeared for the IRB.


On July 22, last year, a High Court ordered Najib to pay RM1.69bil in tax arrears Mohd Nazifuddin was ordered to pay RM37.6mil.
