SANDAKAN: Sandakan has been selected as one of the key locations to benefit from the Ministry’s 2026 Urban Community Economic Empowerment Programme (PEKB), according to Sandakan Member of Parliament, Vivian Wong Shir Yee.
Speaking at the programme, Wong said the selection reflects strong recognition of Sabah’s potential, noting that only 28 out of 114 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) nationwide were chosen, with four based in Sabah.
She described the achievement as a testament to the competitiveness and capability of local communities.
A total of RM12 million has been allocated for the implementation of PEKB this year, benefiting 1,100 Heads of Household (KIR) and Household Members (AIR) from the e-Kasih and B40 categories. Participants will undergo training aimed at increasing their income and improving their standard of living.
The programme offers skills training in areas such as equipment repair services, food and beverage, and mobile fast photography, while also incorporating modules on human development, financial literacy, and capacity building.
Wong emphasised that the initiative goes beyond technical training by fostering confidence and encouraging participants to venture into entrepreneurship.
She added that the programme has set a key performance indicator to ensure that at least 70 per cent of participants are able to generate a minimum monthly income of RM815 within six months, contributing directly to poverty reduction efforts.
Wong also commended participating organisations, including SWEPA, CAL Computer, and programme trainers, for their role in empowering communities through knowledge and skills development.
She expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) for prioritising Sandakan in its development agenda, and called for continued collaboration to eradicate poverty by nurturing more self-sustaining entrepreneurs.
Describing the initiative as a stepping stone towards a brighter future, Wong said the programme would help build a more progressive Sandakan while strengthening efforts to ensure inclusive economic opportunities for all.
There were 40 participants from Sandakan.
