KOTA KINABALU: There should be no excuse at all to delay the implementation of Undi18 as Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan has assured the Federation last year that it will be fully implemented in July this year, said Deputy President of Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) Datuk Darell Leiking.

"Why is the current Government afraid of this UNDI18 voters? It does not mean that UNDI18 will side or vote the Opposition as the young of today have their own independent minds to evaluate who can best represent them and meet their desire.

"For the opposition, securing the votes of the UNDI18 is a tough one too and a challenge but what matters are that allowing their right to vote in the 15th General Election (GE15) will be a significant change and a democratic improvement for the Federation," he said in his Facebook posting, today.

Darell who is also the Member of Parliament for Penampang asserted that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should just implement what was already agreed upon as he has expressed his support on the proposal when he was the Home Minister in the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-Warisan Federal Cabinet.

"You (Muhyiddin) supported it just as all of us and even Parliament passed the Bill UNDI18 on a Bi-Partisan vote. So Prime Minister Muhyiddin, just implement what we all already agreed... and make sure that there is no GE15 until the UNDI18 voters are automatically registered!" he stated.

The postponement of UNDI 18 implementation from July 2021 to after September 2022 was announced by EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh who claimed that the preparations were delayed due to Covid-18 and the movement control orders.

Based on the EC’s records, there are 5.6 million Malaysians who are above 18 but not registered as voters. Of that number, 1.2 million are aged between 18 and 20 while the other 4.4 million are aged 21 and above.
