KENINGAU: The upcoming Apin-Apin Warrior Challenge 2025, a traditional silat tournament set in the heart of Sabah’s interior, has received a major boost with financial support from Bingkor Assemblyman, Datuk Robert Tawik @ Nordin.
The tournament, to be held at Dewan Datuk Angian Andulag in Apin-Apin, aims to unite martial arts talents from across the state, particularly from rural areas, while promoting cultural identity and empowering the younger generation.
The donation was handed over on Robert’s behalf by George Dairie, an officer from the Bingkor Community Development Leader’s Unit (UPPM), to Mohd Nasir Imlan, the official representative of the Fatani Apin-Apin Silat Sports Club (KeSOFAA), the event’s main organiser.
“Silat teaches us courage, discipline and respect. These are values that must remain alive in the hearts of our youth,” said Robert in a statement.
“I’m proud to support KeSOFAA in their efforts to preserve this heritage in a progressive and inclusive way.”
The Warrior Challenge is more than a sporting competition , it is seen as a platform for youth development. Participants are expected to come from a wide range of backgrounds, highlighting the spirit of unity and resilience within the Bingkor community.
“The youth of Bingkor have great potential. All they need is support and opportunity. This tournament is part of our mission to help them shine,” said Robert.
He also emphasised that his support is not limited to financial contributions, but forms part of a long-term commitment to empowering rural youth.
“I want to see our young people stand tall, not only as silat practitioners but as future leaders and cultural torchbearers. That journey starts right here in Bingkor,” he added.
They hope the Warrior Challenge will become an annual event, bringing together the community, silat masters, and local leaders. With its focus on character-building and cultural pride, the tournament is expected to grow into a highlight of the local sporting calendar.
Robert’s approach to grassroots leadership has been praised for its focus on heritage and community development, offering a model of service rooted in tradition and local empowerment.
“This is not just a tournament,” he said. “It’s a reflection of our heritage and an investment in the future of our young generation.”
