TENOM: The legacy of Murut warrior Datuk Seri Panglima Ontoros Endoi @ Antanom should serve as a powerful source of inspiration to strengthen unity and harmony among the people of Sabah, especially the younger generation, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor.

Speaking in conjunction with the 19th Ilau Kalimaran Festival at Dataran Pekan Kemabong on Saturday, Hajiji said Antanom's unwavering fight for justice transcended ethnic boundaries and stood as a timeless symbol of solidarity.

“Antanom’s struggle was not about ethnicity. It was about protecting the dignity and rights of all people,” Hajiji said, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Deputy Chief Minister II and State Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

He urged Sabahans to embrace Antanom’s inclusive spirit as a unifying force, pointing out that although Antanom was a Murut warrior, his courage and sacrifice belonged to all who call Sabah home.

“His legacy teaches us that unity is our greatest strength. In a state as diverse as Sabah, harmony is not only a value—it is a necessity for progress,” Hajiji added.

With Tenom now emerging as a thriving, multi-ethnic district, the Chief Minister underscored that sustainable development is only possible if communities continue to uphold mutual respect and political stability.

“The strength of unity in diversity will not only elevate Sabah’s standing nationally, but also ensure that prosperity is shared fairly and inclusively among all communities,” he said. “Sabah is our home, and it must be governed by leaders who understand and feel the aspirations of the people.”

Hajiji also emphasised the need to preserve cultural identity in the face of modernisation. He called on youth to actively safeguard their traditions, arts, and ancestral heritage, stating that progress and heritage can coexist.

“Technology should not be an excuse to neglect our roots. Cultural values are the foundation of who we are. The spirit of ‘Our Home, Our Responsibility’ must remain alive across generations,” he said.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the State Government’s ongoing support for cultural festivals like Pesta Ilau Kalimaran, which he described as key platforms for fostering unity and mutual understanding among Sabah’s many ethnic communities.

“These celebrations are more than cultural showcases. They are a reflection of our shared identity and the strong bonds that keep Sabah united,” Hajiji said.

He concluded by highlighting that events like Ilau Kalimaran not only honour the state’s rich heritage but also contribute to the political and social stability needed for Sabah to continue progressing as a cohesive and inclusive society.
