BRL launches hiring initiatives for the disabled

KOTA KINABALU: Individuals with disabilities are being afforded equal employment opportunities at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL), thanks to the launch of a dedicated hiring initiative.

This inclusive approach stems from BRL’s disability community employment programme, an initiative spearheaded by Chief Executive Officer Freddie Coleman.

“We hope to expand this programme in the future, recognising the invaluable contributions individuals from all backgrounds bring to our team.

“Our disabled staff members will enrich the experience we provide to our guests,” he said.

BRL remains firmly committed to fostering an inclusive environment in which everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

This commitment was evident with the recent recruitment of three individuals with disabilities to the hospitality team: Bernard Rata Patudong (32), Aremiah Edmund (31), and Steverd Sylvester (25), all of whom joined BRL in March 2025.

Bernard, a Dusun from Lahad Datu, holds a Certificate in Hotel and Catering from Politeknik Kota Kinabalu. Though initially shy, he has consistently demonstrated a strong drive for excellence.

“Those who get to know him quickly discover his warm heart and sense of humour,” said Coleman.

Aremiah, a Rungus from Kudat, graduated with a diploma in 2016 and is skilled in furniture-making and electrical work.

“Despite his quiet demeanour, Aremiah is warm and compassionate, always willing to lend a hand.

“His true passion lies in teaching sign language, and we are excited to support his plans to conduct sign language training for our entire team,” Coleman added.

Steverd, a fellow Dusun from Lahad Datu, completed his SKM in Hotel and Catering at Politeknik KK in 2021. He is known for his infectious smile and unwavering commitment to his duties.

“His kindness often sees him going the extra mile, clearly demonstrating his genuine desire to contribute to the team's success,” said Coleman.

He emphasised that Bernard, Aremiah, and Steverd are not merely housekeeping associates, but integral members of the BRL family.

“Their presence reminds us that kindness knows no bounds and that inspiration can be found in every individual. Their dedication and warmth shine through in all they do.”
