KOTA KINABALU: Two localities in Tawau and one each in Kinabatangan and Kalabakan will be placed under 14 days' enhanced movement control order (EMCO) starting tomorrow due to a surge in Covid-19 cases.

All four localities have a cumulative total of 67 positive cases, said Sabah's official Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Masidi Manjun.

Among the localities is PPR Batu 2 Lorong Habib Abdul Rahman in Tawau which saw 15 out of 48 test samples came back positive, he said.

Another locality in Tawau, PPR BT. 8 Jalan Apas has 18 positive cases out of 27 individuals screened.

According to Masidi, the Health Ministry confirmed that transmissions still occur in both of the localities with high infectivity rates.

"For Kompleks Abedon (Bumiwealth, Kolopis and Tanaki) in Kinabatangan, the total number of positive cases is 13 out of 103 test samples taken.

"Meanwhile, a total of 52 individuals have been screened in FELDA Umas, Kalabakan and of the total, 21 individuals tested positive for the virus. Nineteen test samples are still pending results," he said in his statement today.

"The State Government agreed to place these localities under EMCO starting April 28 to May 11 after conducting a joint risk assessment with various agencies from the MCO Technical Committee and on the advice of the Health Ministry," he added.

The implementation, Masidi stated, is to ensure that the movement of residents in the localities can be controlled in order to prevent transmissions among communities outside of areas under EMCO.

"It is also so that tracing and isolation can be done as soon as possible," he said.
