KIULU: Efforts to expand Kiulu township moved a step closer today with a site inspection held to review the detailed plans for the long-anticipated project.

The visit followed a Kiulu Town Development and Expansion Committee meeting on 25 August, which focused on transforming Kiulu into a well-planned, sustainable township while ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with the community’s growing needs.

Leading the inspection was Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, accompanied by Rural Development Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary (Community) Neldin Gimbang, Tuaran District Officer Herman Tugigging, Kiulu Assistant District Officer Leprus Esuvas Giswa, Tuaran District Council Executive Officer Jamlin Ladin, and Tuaran Member of Parliament representative Jinik Boliking. Officers from various government departments, agencies, and local community leaders were also present.

Joniston, who has long championed rural development, emphasised that the township expansion is closely tied to the construction of the Bayag Bridge, a project expected to be a game changer in boosting connectivity and opening up new economic opportunities.

“The Bayag Bridge is not just about better access, but about connecting communities and unlocking Kiulu’s potential. With the township expansion moving forward, we can plan facilities and services that meet growing demands while positioning Kiulu as a vibrant rural hub,” he said.

Among the proposed facilities are new shophouses, a football field, a fully equipped police station, and low-cost housing — all aimed at improving access to essential services and supporting Kiulu’s emerging role as a premier rural tourism destination.

Joniston, who also serves as Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, noted that Kiulu’s growth is shaped by its dual identity as both an agricultural base and an eco-tourism hotspot.

With increasing numbers of visitors drawn to its authentic community-based eco-tourism experiences, he underscored the importance of balancing development with sustainability.

“We want to deliver better services and facilities for the community without losing the charm and identity that make Kiulu unique. This is about improving livelihoods while safeguarding our environment, culture, and way of life,” he said.

Grassroots leaders have welcomed the expansion plan, describing it as timely and essential in unlocking Kiulu’s potential, creating opportunities, and encouraging young people to remain and thrive in the community.

Joniston assured residents that he would continue to push for developments that are practical, inclusive, and aligned with Kiulu’s long-term vision.
