TUARAN: Fertility treatment offered at the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) clinics nationwide has proven effective, with 6,249 successful pregnancies recorded, according to the board’s 2024 performance report.

The wife of the Chief Minister and President of Pertubuhan Muafakat Titipan Amal Isteri Wakil Rakyat Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (MUTIARA-GRS), Datin Seri Panglima Datuk Hajah Juliah Salag, said a total of 29,163 individuals had undergone treatment at LPPKN clinics across the country.

In this regard, she said LPPKN has introduced the Fertility Treatment Assistance and Infertility Advocacy Programme (BUAI), targeting 30,000 couples to benefit directly.

“Of this number, 1,300 couples will receive financial assistance covering up to two cycles of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment. The programme also emphasises early advocacy through the ‘Earlier, the Better’ campaign, which encourages couples to seek screening and treatment as early as possible,” she said.

She was speaking when officiating the Santuni Kasih: From Family to Community Programme, held in conjunction with the launch of BUAI at the Sabah state level at Dewan Sri Sulaman on Wednesday.

Today’s event marked the final leg of the programme organised statewide by LPPKN in collaboration with MUTIARA-GRS.

Citing a Ministry of Health (MOH) report, Juliah said an estimated one in six married couples in Malaysia faces fertility challenges, showing that subfertility is not an isolated issue but a growing concern, particularly among young couples.

“This is why advocacy efforts and clinical support are crucial, so that affected couples do not feel marginalised,” she added.

Juliah also expressed her appreciation for the active participation of communities from Sulaman, Pantai Dalit, Tamparuli and Kiulu in the programme.

“Their involvement demonstrates our community’s commitment to discussing such an important issue, fertility and family well-being,” she said.
