KENINGAU : A light evening drizzle did little to deter the thousands of Keningau residents who gathered at the Keningau Sports Complex Field last night for a peaceful assembly titled “Justice for Zara”, held in memory of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.
The emotionally charged event has been hailed as one of the most significant gatherings ever witnessed in Sabah, not only due to the overwhelming turnout, but also because of the heartfelt renditions of the national anthem Negaraku and the state anthem Sabah Tanah Airku, which stirred deep feelings of patriotism and a shared resolve to seek justice.
The presence of the Deputy Chief Minister and Member of Parliament for Keningau, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan, alongside the State Assemblyman for Liawan, Datuk Annuar Ayub Aman, underscored the seriousness of the cause and signalled that the people’s demands are echoed by their elected leaders.

Observers noted that the participation of thousands was a powerful reflection of the people’s voice, a demand not only for justice for young Zara, but also a broader rejection of longstanding injustices that many believe have afflicted Sabah since the formation of Malaysia.
The principle of the “Rule of Law”, enshrined in the Rukun Negara, also came under scrutiny. Many participants questioned its observance in light of recent events.
“There is no point proclaiming the Rukun Negara if its principles are not upheld; no agreement holds meaning if it is not honoured,” was a sentiment widely shared throughout the evening, resonating strongly with those in attendance.
For many, the assembly was more than a planned gathering, it was seen as a form of intervention that awakened the conscience of the people to rally for truth and justice.
As the steady rain fell over the field, voices of solidarity and patriotic songs filled the air, illustrating that this movement was far from symbolic. It was, instead, a genuine reflection of the people’s collective will. And from Keningau, a powerful message reverberated far beyond district lines:
“Justice for Zara is justice for every child of Sabah , and for every child of Malaysia.”
