KOTA KINABALU: United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) President Datuk Ewon Benedick’s decision to resign from the Federal Cabinet is both courageous and principled, and it upholds the true spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

UPKO Supreme Council member Rowindy Lawrence, in expressing her full support, emphasised that the MA63 issue—long a subject of debate and contention—should have been resolved by now.

“ Ewon’s decision is not merely a matter of political interest, but a constitutional and moral responsibility that forms the foundation of Malaysia’s creation,” she stated today.

She further highlighted that the 40% entitlement of Federal revenue collected from Sabah is a constitutional right under the Malaysia Agreement 1963. It symbolises the fairness and balance envisioned by our founding leaders at the time of Malaysia’s formation.

Rowindy pointed out that the Kota Kinabalu High Court had explicitly ruled that the Federal Government had failed to honour its responsibilities under the agreement, resulting in Sabah being deprived of its fair share of revenue for over four decades.

“Datuk Ewon’s resignation is therefore a stand of integrity and principle, recognising this truth and asserting his beliefs,” she added.

According to her, Datuk Ewon has sacrificed his position as a Federal Minister, but he has maintained his dignity and credibility.

“We are proud of his achievements and dedication to the people as Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, as he has helped many to improve their livelihoods in various ways,” she said.

She reaffirmed her commitment to support the UPKO President’s decisions and any further actions.
