KENINGAU: The traditional Dusun Gana practice of mantatabang or communal cooperation remains strong in Kampung Sandapak, where villagers continue to uphold the spirit of unity through their annual cemetery clean-up.

Thirty-five residents from Kampung Sandapak and nearby villages took part in the programme yesterday, cleaning both the Christian and Muslim burial grounds in the area.

Village Head KK Ambrus Enggu Ungkiu Singgon said the event reflected the villagers’ close-knit bond and shared responsibility in maintaining harmony within the community.

“Everyone came together voluntarily, regardless of age or background. This is the true meaning of mantatabang — working selflessly for the good of all,” he said.

Also present were Enggon Michael Asong Atam, Chairman of the Sandapak Community Cemetery Welfare Club (KTPMS), and Jefferinus Jitoh Mikat, Chairman of the Susah Senang Club of Kampung Sandapak (KSSKS), who commended the strong community participation.

They said the activity was not only about cleaning but also about honouring those who had passed away, as a well-kept cemetery offers peace and comfort to visiting families.

“A clean and cared-for resting place brings calm and reminds us of love and prayers for those we’ve lost,” said participant Wanddy Juspinah Munsau Bungin.

The programme reaffirmed the enduring community values of the people of Bingkor and Keningau, proving that the mantatabang spirit continues to thrive despite the changes of modern times.
